Toronto and Guelph Railroad.

We are sorry to learn that the managers of the Toronto and Guelph Railway do not find their work proceed[ing] with that success which was to have been expected. The people of Hamilton are hard at work to induce the inhabitants at the Northern end of the line, especially those of Guelph, to give up the Toronto line and build a branch from Guelph to Galt, thence connecting themselves with Lake Ontario by Hamilton. A newspaper discussion is now proceeding on the advantages of the move, and every effort is being put forth by the Great Western Railroad Company to have it carried out. In these circumstances, there is the utmost necessity for exertion on the part of the citizens of Toronto. Already have two or three Municipalities refused their expected aid to the Line; and unless a decided effort is made to push it through, the enterprise may be abandoned, and the rich traffic of the North-west country will fall into the hands of the Hamilton merchants. Every inhabitant of our city is deeply interested in the Guelph Road, be he business man or owner of real estate.

The total expense of building the road is estimated at £250,000, and if the investment were never to make any return, the people of Toronto ought to proceed with it. But there can be no doubt that the speculation will be a most profitable one, as well as an immense help to the city,—and there ought therefore to be no need for urging our citizens the wisdom as well as the duty of giving it a liberal and energetic support. Only five or six thousand pounds, we understand, has as yet been subscribed in the shape of private Stock, though it is in the recollection of all, that a gentleman some time ago, within a space of a few days, got between twenty and thirty thousand pounds of Stock taken up in this neighbourhood, for a Halifax and Québec scheme. One hundred thousands pounds of Stock has yet to be taken up, a rigorous movement would readily accomplish it. The activity and zeal displayed by the people of Hamilton, should rouse us as one man to protect the interests of Toronto.
