Aurora, June 18.—(Special.)—Motor traffic between here and Toronto has been considerably interrupted since early spring by the construction work on the new subway at the Grand Trunk crossing about a mile south of the town. Work on this was commenced early in the new year, and it was intended that it should be completed before the heavy summer traffic commenced. That it is not completed is not an indication of any lack of interest and attention on the part of the Government, as some imagine, but owing to unforeseen difficulties in connection with the excavation.

The Grand Trunk completed their part at an early date by putting in a bridge for the railway, and when the highway contractor came to excavate for the subway he encountered springs, which filled the digging as fast as it was made. This made it necessary to construct a drain, but when this was attempted quicksand was encountered, and it seemed like love's labor lost.

Spring rains added to the difficulty. A detour was built, which, becoming impassable, required hundreds of loads of stone to give it a bottom, and even yet it is not easy of passage, especially when it rains.

The cost of the work is already many times the original estimates, and work is far from completion.
