New cut-off at Long Lake to be opened on Saturday
Announcement is made by the Canadian National Railways that the Long Lake cut-off, the new connecting link between the southern and northern transcontinental routes of the system between Toronto and Winnipeg, has been completed and that operation of passenger trains over the new route will commence on Saturday, January 5.
The Long Lake cut-off is about 30 miles in length and commences at Long Lake station, approximately 640 miles east of Winnipeg, on the southern transcontinental route. From Long Lake station it runs almost due north to Nakina, which is about 500 miles east of Winnipeg on the northern route. By using the new cut-off in the operation of the National, the transcontinental train of the Canadian National Railways running out of Toronto daily, a saving of five hours and five minutes will be made. The present schedule of the National calls for its departure from Toronto at 10.45 p.m. and its arrival in Winnipeg at 9.15 p.m. of the second day. The schedule over the Long Lake cut-off calls for its arrival in Winnipeg at 4.10 p.m. on the second day.
