Special Despatch to The Globe
Belleville, March 30.—Miss Laura Penny, who lived in Thurlow, north of the Grand Trunk Railway, visited the Station Postoffice yesterday afternoon, and when crossing the tracks on her way home was struck by an engine and instantly killed. As she was about to cross the line she saw a train approaching and stepped on to another track to avoid it. A light engine, which was moving on this track, struck her and she fell beneath the wheels, her body being cut in two near the middle. Deceased was 40 years of age.
The death of Miss Penny was followed by the death of her sister, with whom she lived, a short time afterwards. This lady, who had for some time been confined to bed by illness, was so affected when informed of her sister's tragic death that she died within a few minutes after the sad news had been communicated to her. The sisters will be buried together.
