Lindsay sheds at CNR station gutted by fire

Lindsay, Jan 1.—Fire swept through the old Canadian National Railway sheds here today with damage estimated at between $75,000 and $100,000. Fire Chief Alec Wylie was trapped briefly beneath a portion of a fallen wall and was extricated after considerable difficulty by fellow members of the department.

The fire was first seen about noon. It apparently broke out near a stove used to heat part of the 200 by 50-foot building. Under a strong wind, the flames swept through the structure and the office section was gutted. Many records were destroyed despite efforts to bring them out.

Snow was falling and the temperature was around zero when the firemen put eight lines of hose in operation. Wylie, directing operation on the west wall of the structure, was trapped by the legs when a section of wall collapsed. He was not seriously hurt.

Several telephone poles near the building caught fire and residences 75 to 100 feet away were threatened for a time.

Exact loss cannot be estimated for some time since the sheds were full of furniture, bags, boxes and articles in transit.
