Atherley C.N.R. station robbed and burned
Thought to have spread from a lighted cigarette butt and carelessly tossed aside, fire on Tuesday consumed the passenger and freight offices and platform of the Atherley C.N.R. station, completely destroying the station and all its equipment. Damage is estimated in excess of $5,000.
At the time, William Cornish, telegraph operator, was the only man on duty, and with the aid of workmen, saved much valuable freight and express. Railroad telegraph and telephone wires were burned down, cutting of stations north as far as North Bay, from communication. One set of tracks are twisted and warped by the flames. An engine rushed from Orillia to fight the fire, itself caught fire, but the flames were quickly put out. Over the weekend the station was plundered of its passenger tickets by thieves.
