Montréal level crossings.—At a meeting of the Montréal City Council, Oct. 9, Alderman Sadler made some references to the question of the abolition of level crossings in the city. He said, as chairman of the council's railway committee, he had had frequent consultations with Mr. Hays on the subject. Some years ago the company offered to elevate the tracks if the city would pay half the cost. The city had no funds at the time, hence the proposal could not be accepted. Recently Mr. Hays said he was in favor of a four-track elevated line being built to Ste. Elizabeth St. in St. Henry ward. At this point the elevated tracks would reach the level. They would then be continued on the ground out to the Victoria Bridge. It was the company's intention to build a new station on the site of the present one. In addition to this the company would likely remodel its big track space in Point St. Charles. For these, and other reasons, Mr. Hays was most anxious that the city should come to terms with the company whereby the level crossings could be got rid of.
