Grand Trunk.—Thirty-two years ago the town of Whitby, Ont., gave a bonus of $50,000 to the Port Whitby & Port Perry Railway, on the condition that the head office and workshops of the company should be stationed at that place. The Grand Trunk afterward purchased the Midland Railway of Canada, which had absorbed the Port Whitby & Port Perry Railway, and the offices and shops were removed from Whitby. The town sued the Grand Trunk and got judgment on the ground that the Grand Trunk Railway could remove the office, but should have left the shops. He therefore gave the town a reference to assess the damages.
