Hydro cement

To erect big cement plant

The Hydro Electric Commission are contemplating the erection of a large cement plant at their quarry on the former John Scanlan property west of Walkerton, and thereafter will make their cement alongside their own marl beds, which it is said, contain enough limestone of the best quality to run a huge cement plant for half a century. As no better material for making cement has ever been located in Ontario than that found on the Scanlan, Tolton and other properties in that section which the Hydro Commission recently purchased for a quarry, it is probable that one of the biggest cement industries in the Dominion will spring up on the Durham Road west of Walkerton. The long roundabout haul of marl, as it now goes over the G.T.R. via Harriston to the cement plant at Hanover, coupled with the recent raise in the price of freight, are said to have been factors in determining the Commission to erect a cement manufactory of their own alongside their Walkerton works. It is estimated that between the quarry and the bug factory that upwards of 25 men will be employed at the cement camp, which will mean the permanent establishing of a prominent settlement west of the town.
