New railway station sought by Oshawa
Council will ask government to place sum in C.N.R. estimates
(Special Despatch to The Globe.)
Oshawa, May 3.—The Oshawa City Council will ask that a station for this city be included in the Government's estimates for the Canadian National Railways, which are to be made in July. Dr. T. E. Kaiser, M.P., spoke to the Council to obtain all data on conditions and business before laying the matter before the railway officials. He also advised that the railway officials, including Sir Henry Thornton, President of the Canadian National Railways, be asked to view the situation here for themselves.
After battling for more than an hour, the Council decided to set its year's appropriation for local improvements at $200,000. Ald. George Hart, Chairman of the Board of Works, asked for $230,000. Certain members of the Council expressed the opinion that the city should not spend more than $150,000 on local improvements this year.
The Department of Immigration at Ottawa, promised the Council they would conduct a thorough investigation into the complaint registered two weeks ago against the influx of foreigners into this city.
