Train derailed near Callander

Allandale engineer and fireman shaken when engine overturns

Last Friday night a southbound C.N.R. locomotive and two baggage cars left the rails and turned over about two miles from Callander, home of the Quints. Seventy passengers on the train escaped injury, as the coaches and sleeping cars remained upright on the track.

Engineer William Park and fireman Jefferson Webb, of Allandale, crawled out from the overturned locomotive and escaping steam. Mr. Park suffered a sprained shoulder and bruised shin and was taken to North Bay hospital for treatment.

Engineer Park could not account for the cause of the derailment and wondered that he and the fireman had not been killed when the heavy engine toppled over. A deadhead coach between the locomotive and the express car saved the clerks in the two express cars. The empty coach crumply badly from the force of the shock.

Passengers had to wait two hours before being sent back to North Bay and re-routed around by Capreol. Crews from Allandale and North Bay were sent to clear the track and right the heavy locomotive.
