April 9, 1923 B.R.C. File No. 20855 (Train service at Washago) (Ottawa)

Canadian National Railways.

Toronto, April 9th, 1923.

Mr. Alistair Fraser, K.C.,

Commission Counsel,

Montréal, Que.

Dear Sir:—

Referring to your letter of the 28th ult. in regard to application of the residents of Washago that Washago be made a regular stop or a flag stop for train No. 47, also for trains Nos. 55 and 57.

Effective with our summer schedule in the latter part of June, trains Nos. 57 and 58 will be timed to stop at Washago which will provide this additional service for this summer months and up to Oct. 1st.

As to No. 47, I understand the only reason they want that train top stop is to enable passengers to spend the evening in Orillia and get back to Washago the same night.

Train No. 45 is now schedule to leave Orillia at 8.42 P.M., arriving Washago at 9.12 P.M. It is claimed this train is too early to suit them, and they would like to use No. 47, which leaves Orillia at 11.59 P.M. and passes Washago at 12.28 P.M. As far as I can learn it is only a question of enabling them to spend the evening at the movies, and that it is not a business proposition in any way.

I do not believe there is any good reason for stopping No. 47 at Washago, and recommend that the request be declined particularly as this is a heavy train and we have a great deal of difficulty in maintaining the schedule. The latter will apply just as much during the summer months as in the winter, as we handle a great many extra sleepers during the summer on account of tourist travel.

The Traffic Department concur in the foregoing.

Yours truly,
C. G. Bowker
General Manager.
