Neon-tube flashing-light signals

A new type of highway crossing signal has been placed on the market which utilizes the high visibility of neon tube lamps arranged in such configuration as to resemble a lightning flash. This new product is being sold by International Equipments, Inc., 20 Pine street, New York, and by Dominion International Equipments Limited, 3081 Ontario street. East Montréal, Que. It is claimed that neon tube lamps possess a high-attention-arresting value, as evidenced by the rapid increase in the number of such signs for advertising purposes. The lightning flash, when illuminated, measure five feet from tip to tip. Three distinct illuminating units are employed and these are mounted in a weatherproof metal flash box provided with a clear cover glass capable of transmitting readily the particular wave lengths of light emitted by the neon tubes. The control of these individual light units is such that the effect on the eye is that of a repeated flash of lightning. The left section of the lamp is first illuminated, then the center section, and finally the right section. This action is repeated about 60 times a minute, the effect being that of a rapidly moving streak of lightning. It is said that the signal is so distinctive that it cannot be mistaken for any other light.

If one of the neon tubes should fail, there would still be two others in service to give warning of an approaching train. The neon tube gives a long advance warning of deterioration by a gradual fading in color. Thus, an inspection of the signal will re veal the necessity of replacement before a failure occurs. The life of the neon lamp is said to be more than 5,000 hr. This is based on steady burning, but as the lamps for flashing-light signals are operated only intermittently, it is claimed that the new signal will operate for many years before any need for replacement arises. Another advantage which is cited is the fact that no red lens or color filter is necessary with the neon lamp, because the latter is an original source of red light. Hence, there is no absorption as when using a color filter. Also, there can be no phantom indication from an automobile headlight because the neon tube is colorless.
