Atherley station destroyed by fire

Old C.N.R. building at junction near Orillia burns fiercely

Traffic tie-up averted

Special Despatch to The Globe.

Orillia., May 26.—The Canadian National Railways station at Atherley was burned to the ground shortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon. An alarm was turned in, and the Orillia Fire brigade went over with the truck and hose, but could render no assistance, as it was beyond the town's waterworks system. The blaze started beneath the station platform.

The building was of frame construction, erected more than 50 years ago, and burned fiercely, the fire destroying telegraph poles, and ties on the Midland track being also burned. Atherely is a junction point, the Midland line from Blackwater and the northern line from North Bay meeting here, and running over the same tracks into Orillia.

It was feared at first that all traffic north and east, would be tied up, but the old Northern track was soon cleared. Trains were run over it, the Blackwater train backing out from Orillia, and Y-ing on to the track, east beyond Atherley. The station was broken into Sunday, and some tickets stolen. Fortunately, the auditor was there before the fire occurred, and found that the tickets taken were not of much value. The robbery was probably the work of boys, who did not know the value of the different tickets.
