Brief Historical Review

Opened for operation Yard to Tweed 1889.

Built under charter of the Napanee, Tamworth and Québec Railway under following statutory atuhority, Dominion of Canada, Act 42 V. Chap. 67, 1879.

The Napanee, Tamworth and Québec Railway Company was incorporated under Act 42 V., Chap. 67, of Canada in 1879, and changed its name to the Kingston, Napanee and Western Railway Co. in 1890, which amalgamated with the Bay of Quinte Railway and Navigation Co. in 1896 to form the Bay of Quinte Railway Co. This latter company was acquired by the Canadian Northern Railway Company in 1914, control of which passed to the Dominion Government in 1917, and in conjunction with other Government Railways is operated under the title of Canadian National Railways.

Physical characteristics of line to be abandoned

(a) Rail - 1.27 miles 80 lb. 2.37 miles 70 lb., 1.72 miles 65 lb., and 28.58 miles 56 lb.; 65 lb and 56 lb. in poor condition.
(b) Bridge - 11 steel bridges and 3 timber bridges. 7 bridges require new decks and 4 need minor repairs.
(c) Culverts - Condition fair to poor
(d) Ballast - Gravel and cinder - poor
(e) Ties - Untreated softwood - 20% good, 20% fair, 60% poor.
(f) Max. Grades - Northbound - 2.0%
- Southbound - 1.7%
(g) Curvature - Maximum 8°31
(h) Drainage - Poor

Train Service

A mixed train service in direction, daily except Sunday, has been in operation since 1935.

Brief description of territory served.

The line passes through a mixed farming community which also produces some lumber and pulpwood. Tweed, which is also served by the C.P.R., is the most important town on the line and has a number of industries. Round trip bus services are operated daily except Sundays from Tamworth to Kingston via Napanee, and between Tweed and Belleville; in addition, during July and August a similar service is operated between Tweed and Peterboro, and several local truckers operate within a twenty mile radius of Tweed.

Larkins - 12 miles Tweed — C.P.R. Public siding. Very few shipments.

Tweed 1,271 Served by C.P.R. Terminal tracks and C.P.R. interchange. Industries — steel works, foundry, milling company, 2 builder's supplies, 10 cheese factories.
