Gravenhurst Rubberset employees still on strike
One hundred and fifty employees of the Rubberset Company at GravenhurstRubberset manufactured shaving brushes; their factory at Gravenhurst was opened in 1920 and closed in 1994. are still on strike and have not yet reached an agreement with the company heads.
The employees have been seeking settlement with the company in the matter of working conditions and an agreement made tentatively between them and the local management in August, which had not been in operation because of amendment by the head offices of the Rubberset Co.
The Gravenhurst plant is the only one belonging to that firm in Canada. It is a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers, the large American manufacturers who hold the patents on the Canadian-made products. The employees went on strike on Sept. 23rd and have been orderly and have created no disturbance.
Attempts at settlement have been made by a government mediator, G. L. Fenwick, of the Department of Labor, but at a conference Mr. L. S. Hewes, of the Rubberset Co., is reported as having said that he has received instructions from the head office to close and plant indefinitely and that the company were not prepared to discuss terms with the employees at the present time.
It is recalled that the company built a large addition to their plant last fall and were granted a fixed assessment by the corporation.
