Thursday, April 26, 1883 The Northern Advance (Barrie) Page 2, col. 1

The Canadian Pacific Ry. Coy. have broken off the negotiation with the Grand Trunk, have acquired Control of a part of the Atlantic and Northwestern, the Ontario and Québec, and the Credit Valley. This move gives them a direct line from the seaboard through the centre of Ontario to St. Thomas, where they connect with the Canada Southern and the Vanderbilt system and thus reach Chicago. It was one of the biggest moves in the history of Canadian railways, and the Grand Trunk have been completely fooled. Now, if the Northern is extended from Gravenhurst to Callendar, and running powers given over it to the C.P.R. the back of the Grand [Trunk] monopoly will be most effectually broken; especially when the C.P.R. branch to Sault Ste. Marie, connects with the northern American system, which it will before the close of 1884.

Railways: C.P.Ry., C.Vy.Ry., G.T.Ry., O. & Q.Ry.
