Road from Birch to Midland is now closed

The C.N.R. has discarded the short line between Midland and Birch as being of no further use and unprofitable, and the rails are now being removed from Birch to Wyebridge. This line was constructed over twenty years ago to relieve the congestion on the Midland-Belleville line. At that time there was a tremendous amount of freight being handled from the saw mills, elevators and the smelter, the latter blocking the road at times with coke shipments. This has all been changed and there is not as much freight moved in a month now as there was then in a week, hence the reason for scrapping this connecting link between the Midland and Penetang lines. There may be some change now of improving the dangerous highway crossing at Wyebridge.
