at points outside of

March, 1893.

2

To Employees.

These Instructions regarding the use of Special Semaphores are for the guidance of all Employees who, in their various duties, are governed by, have care of, or work signals.

The Signals named will be worked in accordance with the instructions given; but it must be understood by all that they are also to be used when necessary for the protection of the Company's property as provided for in Book of Rules and Regulations.

The Semaphores protecting Diamond Crossings will be worked as per Rules 112 and 396. See also special rule in Time Tables referring to Rule 112.

The various Sidings outside of Stations or between Stations are also shewn and located, and similar information is also given regarding Water and Suction Tanks.

All trains and light engines must approach Tanks designated under proper control, in expectation of finding a preceding train stopped for water, but nothing in these instructions relieves Trainmen of their duty to properly protect trains as required by Company's Rules.

As nearly as is possible, all mileage mentioned agrees with the Mile Boards as placed, or with mileage as given in Working Time Tables.

Unless specially mentioned, there are no Semaphores to protect Water Tanks or Sidings placed outside of Station Yards and located in these instructions.

Jas. Stephenson,
Superintendent.
L. J. Seargeant,
General Manager.

Explanation of the Interlocking Signalling and Derailing Appliances and Rules Governing the Use of the Same Where Placed.

Explanation of Signals

The crossing as approached from each direction is protected by a "Distant" and a "Home" signals and "Derailing Switch." The signals displayed are Distant (or cautionary) and Home (or stop) signals, all of semaphore pattern, and govern the movements of trains or engines by position of arms by day, and color of lights by night.

The signal arm always points to the right hand when approaching it. The back view of signal arm will in on case govern the movement of a train or engine.

A Sempahore Distance signal will have one of two positions:.
First. A Forked Blue arm extended horizontally thus
by day or a Blue Light by night will indicate Caution.
Secondly. A Forked Blue arm extended at an angle of 60 degrees from horizontal line thus
by day or a White Light by night, will indicate Safety or Go ahead.

124

A Sempahore Home signal will have one of two positions:.
First. A Red arm extended horizontally thus
by day or a Red Light by night will indicate Danger or Stop.
Secondly. A Red arm extended at an angle of 60 degrees from horizontal line thus
by day or a White Light by night will indicate Safety or Go ahead.

Location of Signals.

Distance signals 1750 feet from towers.

Home signals 550 feet from towers.

Rules Governing Use of Signlas.

If Distant signals show Caution, trains or engines may pass them, but must be brought under full control, prepared to stop before reaching Home signals. If Home signals show Danger, trains or engines must come to a full stop and must not pass them until they show Safety.

125

Trains or engines may be run quite up to Home signals, but NEVER beyond, when at DANGER.

If both Distance and Home signals show Safety, trains or engines may proceed without stopping.

Passenger trains must not exceed a speed of twelve miles per hour and freight trains eight miles an hour while crossing Diamonds.

Trains or engines must NEVER, under any circumstance, pass Home signals set at Danger, or they will be derailed.

Derailing switches are provided with detector bars about 40 feet in length—enginemen are required to keep clear of these bars when standing.

All trainmen and enginemen will be held equally responsible for the observance of these Rules, and all interested will be governed accordingly.

When irregular movements of trains, etc. are necessary or the interlocking is out of order trains may be flagged through the limits of interlocking by the signalman.

The provisions of Rule 24 which conflict with the above will not be observed at points where these signals are in operation.
