The South Parry to Parry Sound portion of the Bala Subdivision has as its origin the James Bay Railway (J.B.Ry.), which was incorporated in 1895 to construct a line from Parry Sound to Hudson Bay. The J.B.Ry. opened a 5-mile line from the Canada Atlantic Ry. (C.A.Ry.) at Quebec Siding to Parry Sound in 1902-03 (approximately 1.9 miles of which is the the Subdury Subdivision).
