Painters obliterate name noted in Canada's history.
Paint brushes, from Portland and Montréal on the east to Chicago on the west, are starting in with the coming of spring to carry out a work which represents such more than adding a new coat of color where the old one has grown a bit dim. They are starting in on the job of painting out the name
Grand Trunk Railwaywherever it appears and putting in its place the nameNational Railway System, of such other application of the words as the management directs. This means that a name which became familiar in Canada even prior to Confederation will disappear from hundreds of stations, thousands of cars and millions of letter heads, folders, etc.The words,
Grand Trunkare indeed closely bound up with the history of this province. G.T.R. trains ran as far west as Toronto from Portland, as early as October, 1856, and in 1859 the main line from Montréal to Sarnia was completed. The company was incorporated in 1852, and among those responsible for the incorporation are names distinctly associated with the most outstanding events in the political and transportation life of Canada.
