Grand Trunk Pacific to use telephones not the telegraph

It is reported that the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company is to sped a sum exceeding $200,000 this year in the construction of station buildings along their main line between Winnipeg and Edmonton.

Hitherto, a box or small shack has had to serve the purpose of telegraph office, baggage room and waiting room at several points along the line.

Mr. Ashald, the superintendent of the Grand Trunk telegraphs, states that the company has arranged a telephonics system for despatching trains over its entire railroad. The system has been under trial during the last eighteen months, and after some alterations had been effected, gave very great satisfaction.

The telephone despatching department, which will work over a railroad of nearly 4700 miles, includes 31 circuits, and it is estimated that the cost of installation will work out at about $105 per mile.
