Grade separation on St. Clair Ave depends on city

If it bears cost, Railway Board to order construction at once

Reply to Mayor Wemp

An order will be issued at once for the construction of northwest grade separation at St. Clair Avenue if the city will bear the entire cost.

This was the answer given by the Dominion Railway Board, a body over which the Federal Government has not control, to the request of Mayor Wemp for an order that the work be proceeded with immediately. The answer was received by his Worship on Saturday from Thomas Vien, Secretary of the board.

More than a week ago Mayor Wemp wired Premier King on the matter, who expressed a desired to relive unemployment by a dollar-for-dollar contribution on subway construction, and stated that he would ask the Dominion Railway Board to make an order.

Upon the receipt of the telegram from Mr. View, the Mayor planed his own construction on the effect of the board's order. He pointed out that the C.P.R. would be relieved entirely of its responsibility, and that the Dominion Government and Government-owned railway would pay dollar-for-dollar with the city and the Province, which mean, on the basis of cost of Bloor and Lansdowne Avenue subway, that the Government would pay $1,000,000 and the city and Province $2,000,000.

Mr. View also pointed out that the Chief Commissioner on Jan. 3 had intimated that if the city desired authority for the construction of the work an order would be made if the Grade Crossing Fund nor the railway companies were not expected to hear the cost.
