St. John potato warehouse.—C.N.R. officials discussed recently with St. John, N.B., City Council the provision of a warehouse for use in connection with the increasing export trade in potatoes arriving over C.N.R. lines. The matter was discussed at a meeting July 15, and on Aug. 5, W. U. Appleton, General Manager, Atlantic Region, submitted an estimate of $10,600 for frost-proofing the portion of Pettengill wharf known as the wine shed and the shed used by the Canadian Pacific Ry. for its Bay of Fundy service, to be done at once. A further expenditure of $6,000 was suggested to be made as required for strengthening the sheds' superstructure. The C.N.R. has not suitable site at the port on which to build, the Pettengill wharf is said to be the most feasible location, as the C.N.R. would not invest capital in property not owned by it. The matter was referred to Commissioner Bullock and the City Engineer, who presented reports to the City Council Aug. 12. The Council approved of the plans and estimates for the work as amended by the City Engineer, and decided to do it, and to charge the C.N.R. a rental of $1,525 for 6 months, from Nov. 1 to May 1, plus top and side wharfage, the agreement to end in 1930, the C.N.R. to supply a railway spur for the Canadian Pacific Ry. at the Eastern Steamship Co.'s pier.
