..  More than 35,000 commuters all but overwhelmed CNR and CPR facilities Monday morning and night. The CPR station at Islington ran out of tickets and CNR conductors were unable to move through trains to collect fares.

"Fares were really secondary today," a CPR official said. "The important thing was getting the people in and out of the city."

The regular morning train from Oakville carried about 3,000 commuters. And the extra trains from both Port Credit and Oakville were jammed. A new evening shuttle has been started by the CNR for the duration of the emergency. Times from Union Station are 4:30 p.m. to Port Credit; 5 p.m. to Long Branch, Port Credit and Oakville; 5:20 p.m. regular commuter to Hamilton; 5:40 specail to Oakville; 6:20 second regular to Hamilton; 6:45 special to Port Credit; 8 p.m. to Oakville.

The Parkdale-Malton shuttle was placed on an all-day rather than rush hour basis.  ..
