The trolley.
The Metropolitan Ry. Co. has applied to Toronto City Council for permission to cross Cottingham Street, to enable it to make connection between its system and that of the C.P.R. The Metropolitan desires to reach St. Lawrence Market for the freight which originates on its line and also to reach the foot of Yomge St. and the Union Station for its passengers. The Co. does not as yet possess the right to run electric cars on that part of Yonge St. which is in the city, and north of the C.P.R. crossing, from the old tollgate to Cottingham. St. Its charter permits only horse cars between these points, but the city has granted them a limited yearly privilege to use electric cars.
The new electric engine, manufactured to draw freight, took a run over the line to Bond's Lake and appeared to work satisfactory. It weighs 60 tons and looks as if capable of drawing a very heavy load.
Work commenced yesterday to extend the track from Roe's corner to the Bently Block, where the passenger waiting room and office will be located.
