Canadian National Railways construction, betterments, etc.
Island Division, Atlantic Region, standardization.—The portions of the old Prince Edward Island Ry., west of Royalty Jct., viz: via Summerside to Tignish, 109.91 miles, and from Emerald Jct., 30.30 miles west of Charlottetown, to Borden, 12.11 miles, were changed from 3 1/2 ft. gauge to 4 ft. 8 1/2 in., the work being completed by Aug. 11, 1923, and a third rail was laid between Charlottetown and Royalty Jct., 5.26 miles, so that standard gauge as well as narrow gauge trains could be operated between those points. In 1924, a three years' programme was arranged for standardizing the gauge of some of the lines east of Royalty Jct., viz: from there to Souris, 54.98 miles, from Mount Stewart Jct. to Georgetown, 24.10 miles, and from Roseneath on the latter branch to Montague, 52.1 miles.
