Québec bridge.—The contract for the clearing of the debris of the collapsed uncompleted central span of the projected bridge near Québec, has been let by the Department of Railways to Capt. Koenig, the work to be completed by Mar. 1. The steel work overhanging the shore piers, and the bed of the river where it fell, has to be removed. Work was commenced clearing away the steel on the south side of the river Jan. 4.
In the meantime M. P. and J. T. Davis are engaged in getting ready all their material and plant for the changes in piers. It will be some little time before they will be able to get at the piers themselves, as the fallen steel work has first to be cleared away.
The alternative plans prepared by the Commission of Engineers for the reconstruction of the bridge, have been on exhibition at the offices of the Commission, in Montréal since Jan. 3, to enable representatives of the bridge building firms to obtain the necessary data to prepare for tending. It is expected that it will take two or three months for the plans to be thoroughly examined and prices worked out.
Reply to questions in the House of Commons, Jan. 17, the Minister of Railways said the total cost of the commission in connection with the inquiry into the collapse of the Québec bridge was $31,764.44; and the total cost to Dec. 31, 1909, of the board of engineers in preparation of plans, etc., was $123,469.03.
