Western lines betterment in 1924.—In addition to construction work and track laying on branch lines, referred to in detail in Canadian Railway and Marine World for January, pg. 10 and 11, a large of amount of general betterments was done on the Western Region in 1924. During the year 3,400,000 ties were used for renewal purposes, and 85 lb. rail were laid of 271.67 miles of track, replacing lighter ones. Track revision work was done for 7.5 miles on the Sprague Subdivision, and 3.52 miles of new track and 9.69 miles of second track were laid in the Kashabowie Subdivision, both between Port Arthur and Winnipeg. About 40 miles of new tracks were laid in extension of yard tracks, sidings and spurs were laid at various points, and a material yard was laid out at Campbell's Creek, B.C. Ballasting was completed on the second track between Kakabeka and Mokomen, Ont., and on the 18 miles of the Yellowhead-Rainbow co-ordination. Considerable improvements were made to water supply plants at Edson, Chandler, Regina, Minaki, and Northgate, and on the Touchwood Subdivision, Sask. The bridges across the Kaministiquia River, at mile 23.2 Kashabowie Subdivision, just west of Port Arthur, were made double track bridges, 4 steel bridges were erected, and the substructure was placed for a fifth, in the Saskatchewan and Alberta Districts. Buildings of various kinds were erected at Yorkton, North Battleford, Saskatoon, and other points, adding considerably to the facilities for handling traffic. Additional buildings were provided at Jasper Park, Alta., and tennis and golf courts laid out. Improvements are being made to the buildings and grounds at Grand Beach, Man., and a gold course is being laid out at Minaki, Man. Considerable improvements were made to the fire protection devices at the railway's pleasure resorts.
